So I’m not the typical worship leader… to the extent that I rarely listen to Christian music. It’s been a long long time since I bought a Worship Record. It’s just how God wired me I think.

However, I have recently been INFATUATED with a new song by Matt Redman: You Alone Can Rescue.

Se, the way I connect with God is through reading. Music has become such a means of expression for me that it’s hard to connect with God on that raw and honest level that I used to. So I rely on reading His word and listening to His truth, and it works great for me. But sometimes a song comes along that is just FULL of truth and power…”You Alone Can Rescue” is…It’s so Amazing. Music, Friendship, and Growing up

I started playing music, like a lot of kids, when I was in high school. I wore many faces:

It’s been a crazy ride, musically, so far. But the thing that sticks out to me more than what face I was wearing is the relationships that have been built, and people I’ve met in each stage. Most kids start bands because they starve for that depth of friendship. It’s a big deal to have the sort of companionship that comes with creating music together.

Lately, I’ve become a loner, musically. I write alone. When I play shows, I play alone. Last weekend, I had the opportunity to have dinner and hang out with a good friend that I played guitar for over 2 years ago. He’s working on some new songs that are really cool and in a fresh style for him. We had dinner and told stories and went to the house and caught up. After that night, while I miss playing guitar with that band, and miss all the long night rehearsals, I found myself overwhelmed with gratitude. I was so thankful to have those kinds of memories.

It makes me wonder what will be coming down the road next. I’m looking forward to writing a similar post in 5 years and reflecting on a whole bunch of new memories.

Growing up isn’t so bad.

I’ve been so busy the past few months that I haven’t had time to listen to music. Sad right? Well, Starting in June, I made a commitment to keep my iPod charged, keep a decent amount of songs on my Blackberry, and keep my iTunes up as much as possible.

Now I’m finding myself falling back in love with music. So I thought, I would share what my top 5 favorite songs (at the moment).

About 5 years ago, I took my then girlfriend (now wife) to a concert. She was 16. I was 19 (I know I know, Cradle Robber). I went to her house and picked her up. Her dad squeezed my hand, and said, “Take care of my baby, she’s my only one!” And we left. We drove and drove and finally ended up at the venue in Johnson City, TN, where we walked up to the ticket booth to get our “will call” tickets that cost 30 bucks.

While we waited for the doors to open, the sun went down and we kept talking about how excited we were. Neither of us had seen John Mayer live, but we were sure that it would be the best concert ever. We didn’t even care who else was on the bill…We were just there for Mayer.

The show was incredible, life-changing for me. It pushed me harder into music than I had ever been pushed before. HE HAD A CONVERSATION WITH HIS GUITAR!!!! And for years the ripples of that concert have rocked my life. But I missed something there, and it depresses me.

The band that opened for JM was GUSTER. It’s not that I didn’t like them, it’s just that…How could they even compare? I was there for Mayer. I was singing all the songs from Heavier Things, Room for Squares, and Inside Wants Out all the way up there. Guster didn’t have a chance. But NOW?!?!?! I have now found a true love in Guster’s music. I have a few records and thank to iTunes Genius I have found another push into my musical future. It’s Awesome…

I wonder what else I’ve overlooked?

Up ’til April

Okay! Scratch the last 6 months…My life has been so busy that I only remember highlights:

Thanksgiving in St. Augustine

Christmas in TN

Launched a church in January

Stood outside and pumped gas in 30 degree weather with some AWESOME RCC volunteers

Took a Trip to ATL…much much more on that later

had and incredible Good Friday Experience and Easter thanks to some incredible ideas from Buckhead Church

and now…playing some shows throughout the month of April.

This coming weekend I’m playing drums for a band called SKYVIEW at Floyds in Tallahassee. Next Weekend, I get to spend time with my stepdad at Swanee River Jam. Then to finish up April, I’m managing, and playing in a band called “Thrown Together” for the Blountstown Relay for Life Opening Night.

Everything is crazy. My wife has been a much better blogger than me. Check her Blog out. I’ll start up my blogging engine again.

An Artist Among Filmmakers

For years, my favorite movie has been Pulp Fiction. I could go on and on about the brilliance of the writing, that dialogue, not action, keeps the film moving forward, the quality of actors that are used in the movie, and the brutal honesty that the film portrays in word, deed, and cinematography.

Tonight, Jadie and I went to see Quentin Tarantino’s new movie Inglorious Basterds…All I can say is… AMAZING. It’s not a movie I’d take my 6 year old neice to see, or maybe even my 18 year old sister to see. But for someone who likes RAW, IN YOUR FACE, BRILLIANT film making, this is the perfect movie.

Ultimate Authority

This morning, Paul spoke on Ultimate Authority. It was packaged in a series called “Nine to Five” dealing with the workplace. However, when it comes to the principle that is being taught it is, “Ultimate Authority” straight out of the 7 Checkpoints.

However, as I listen to this talk, it makes me wonder: In Waumba Land, we have 3 vital truths that are taught over and over. In Upstreet, we have 3 more vital truths that are taught over and over. In Student Ministry, we have the 7 Checkpoints that are taught over and over… If we had to dial down what we taught in Adult service to “_ vital truths,” what would they be? How many of them would there be? I’m not sure, but I’d love to hear from some other minds about it.

My desk this week

On Monday, I decided I was going to give at least two blogs portraying the madness that is going on at RCC this week. So, I took a picture with my phone, e-mailed it to my inbox on my mac “Mail” and that is where it has sat…until today, that is, Saturday. My week was so hectic that I didn’t even have time to blog 1 sentance about how hectic it was. Here’s a Rundown:

Monday: Staff Meeting -> Lunch -> Picture -> WebSite -> Meeting ->Home

Tuesday: DIDN’T EVEN GO INTO MY OFFICE (Spent the ENTIRE day putting gear in road cases for Marianna, and Labeling Stuff…Claude called it Christmas Afternoon)

Wednesday: Christmas Afternoon continued -> Lunch -> Went to my office for about 30 minutes to do paperwork -> Worked on AVIOM (I’m sure I’m forgetting something)

Thursday: Again worked with gear -> Lunch -> Met about the talk -> Spent a lot of time walking between the offices and the auditorium -> Rehearsal -> Meeting after rehearsal -> realized i’m sick and had a fever ->Fever broke in the middle of the night

Friday: Worked on Website to get it ready to launch phase 1 on Sunday -> Lunch -> came back to the office for 30 minutes to realize I couldn’t win the battle I was fighting with my sinus’ ->Came home -> worked a little ->stayed doped up

Saturday: Felt much better -> Spent the entire day finishing the website phase 1 -> Hope it looks good

17 Days….17 Days until we start meeting at Marianna High School. RCC is an exciting place to work right now. BUSY BUSY. So needless to say, blogging got pushed to the “When I have Time” category. Anyway, I’ll try my best to keep this blog updated as we go through the next month and a half.
